17-Day Golf Road Trip – Winner Announced (Leg 3)

Whitefish, MT: Whitefish Lake Golf Course

HELLO Whitefish, MT!  What a cute town!  A small factoid…Whitefish is the 14th largest town in Montana with a smidge over 6,000 people.  Whitefish has done a great job with their downtown.  LOTS of fun restaurants!

Back to golf….We are starting Rounds 8, 9 and 10.  180 holes will be played when we are finished!  10 Rounds in 12 days.

Rain, rain go away….come back another day (and please, not while I’m playing golf)!  I will be the first to admit, I am a fair-weather golfer, especially in Scottsdale as we have too many nice days to play golf.  Why play in the rain?

Now, when on vacation….things change.  Put on the rain gear (yep, had to buy some as we didn’t bring that either), extra towels, and get playing!  Thank you Ping  as I love my Ping hat! My hat kept me dry!

Another fabulous course today playing Whitefish Lake North Course!  We are finishing up The Thornton Cup and have 3 rounds left.  If you have missed the other 2 legs click here for Leg 1 and click here for Leg 2.

I’ve been asked how “competitive” is this Thornton Cup.  Let’s just say, neither of us like to lose. When the Thornton’s play Matchplay in The Thornton Cup, we do NOT give 4’ putts like some people think we do.  Heck, there are times a 1-2′ putt isn’t given.  This isn’t a “friendly” husband and wife match…this is for The Thornton Cup.  Roy and I both love to win.

You may get a 4 footer when:
a) You’ve lost the hole
b) You’ve lost the hole and you’re putting for bogey or some other score.

Especially these last 3 rounds…count on putting everything out.

Fun round today.  I played well on the front (shooting 38).  I was +3 after 9.  Then Roy came roaring back on the back.  Roy is +2 after today’s round.

Thornton Cup Update:
Today’s Round: Roy: +2
Overall:  Janis +7

Whitefish Lake Golf Course - South Course

The rain did go away for this round.  Another beautiful course, however, I did like the North course better.  North has more character to it with South having more houses.  Still a beautiful round of golf.  The greens rolled great.

One thing that makes playing golf fun, is you typically get paired up with really nice people.  Which we did again!

The other issue you may get is when you are paired up with complete beginners.  We all have been in those shoes.  Roy and I definitely want to help grow the game of golf and are always excited that people get out to play.

If you are a newer golfer or someone who isn’t that good, PLEASE learn some golf etiquette.   It will make everybody’s round more enjoyable.

Good etiquette rules:

  • Be aware of your pace of play. If you only hit the ball 50-70 yards, you won’t need 3-4 practice swings prior to hitting your ball.
  • If you top the ball 2-3 times, pick your ball up and bring yourself to 75-100 yards (or put your ball down where your partner is playing)
  • If its taken you 8-10 tries to just get to the green….pick your ball up. You’re done. You shouldn’t have to be told to pick up your ball.  A score of 14 on your card isn’t going to make your day.
  • Pace of play is very important. You should be able to play a round of golf in 4 hours regardless of skill level.
  • Play ready golf. Yardage devices work great.
  • Always keep up with the group in FRONT OF YOU. Unless it’s a Par 3, the group in front of you shouldn’t be on the green and you are just getting to the tee box.
  • Play yardage appropriate tees!

My rant is over…

Yes, we got paired up with some very nice guys, however, they struggled with hitting the ball.  They just weren’t very aware.

Round 9 of The Thornton Cup:
Janis +3
Overall:  Janis +10 (Roy still hasn’t given up yet and if you saw the other posts, you saw he was +6 during 1 round).

The Wilderness Club, Eureka, MT

Round #10, the best course was definitely saved for last!

We played The Wilderness Club in Eureka, MT.  What a hidden gem of a golf course!

The Wilderness Club is the perfect name for this course because you are out in the middle of nowhere and you feel that way when you are driving there!

This was our favorite course we played out of the 10 courses!  Stunning views, the greens rolled perfect…lots of undulation in the greens which made them tricky, but fun and challenging.

Roy started off hot and won the first 2 holes.  I had to take a deep breath to not let that get away from me.  He started birdie, par when I started bogey, bogey.  I did not want to get on a dumb bogey train!

I was able to bring this match back to even on 8 and close Roy out on Hole 10.  We both birdied.

I beat Roy 9 and 8 on the 172 hole.   Crazy…we played 10 rounds in 12 days!

We originally weren’t paired with anybody for this round, but because of pace of play with the groups in front of us, another two-some joined up with us the last 4 holes.

The Wilderness Club is a growing community.  Lots of houses being built in the area.  Highly recommend this golf course!  We will be back!  Not sure I want to stay in Eureka just yet…they have a lot of development that needs to happen.  This was only a beautiful 1 hour drive from Whitefish.

Next on the agenda…start heading back to Scottsdale.  Yellowstone National Park is the next stop!
